Sul Ross also has a huge indoor pool that is open to the public and costs $2. There are also some great hiking/biking trails behind the university that give you an amazing 360 view of the country (15-20 minutes up). There is a desk on the top of Sul Ross Hill that has a notebook in it to record your ruminations - look for the bicycle art installation - text me if you need more hints :) - fun activity!

Alpine is located at "the hub of the wheel" of the neighboring communities of Marfa, Marathon, and Fort Davis. Each are approximately 20 minutes away in any given direction.

To the west: Marfa, the minimalist art headquarters of Texas.

The Chinati Foundation / Contemporary minimalist art museum based upon the ideas of its founder, Donald Judd.
The Marfa Lights viewing area / Accounts of strange and unexplained phenomena just outside of Marfa began during the 19th century and continue to this day.

To the north: Fort DavisThe skies in our country are unfathomably clear and beautiful so make sure to schedule a Star Gazing party at McDonald's Observatory. The Fort is also a lovely spot.
Prude Ranch / horseback riding - be sure to call ahead for availability.
Balmorhea State Park / boasts the largest spring fed public pool in the state, with amazing cottage rentals.

To the south: Big Bend National Park and the Mexican border are about 45 minutes south.
Terlingua Ghost Town boasts the Starlight Theatre & Restaurant and La Posado Milagro Guesthouses & Restaurant.
Desert Sports / offers custom guided river and backcountry mountain biking trips in the Big Bend area. Great folk
Big Bend Ranch State Park tends not to be as busy as Big Bend National Park and has a wonderful (and cheap) bunkhouse for accommodations OR the old adobe ranch headquarters - dreamy. Great camping, hiking, biking etc. The Solitario region is awesome and one of our fave spots.

To the east: Marathon & the historic luxury Gage Hotel
